Hooker & Young Interviews Ken Picton
Last month, Ken sat down with the dynamic hairdressing duo Hooker & Young for an in-depth interview which has just been published in Professional Hairdresser. Although Donald Trump was in town while the meeting took place, this day was all about President Picton!
Gary and Michael are an award-winning hairdressing couple, whose column in Professional Hairdresser each month features a sit-down interview with an industry icon. Here are some highlights from their chat with Ken…
On running a super salon…
It happened more by accident than design, when it started to work, I just took a gamble on going big, rather than expanding and so far it is working. I have spoken to a number of people with multiple salons and it seems that anyone with more than three seems to wish they had done it how I have!
On winning competitions…
We have won around 35 major awards. What has always been nice for us, is that feeling of winning despite where we are located, as many of them can feel a little London-centric.
On being President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing…
I’ve done a lot of work previously with Jo Martin and Simon Shaw on moving the Fellowship to a more digital-based model and I see my role as President really being to help facilitate that change further.
On the future…
I don’t think I could ever retire – I love what I do too much! At this moment, my focus is still on growing the business and continuing the momentum, and letting the future take care of itself.
You can read the rest of Ken’s interview in the July/August issue of Professional Hairdresser magazine. A huge thanks to Hooker & Young for taking the time!
